Charter yacht jetty sinks in Shute Harbour

A JETTY in Shute Harbour has slipped into the water, with salvage crews currently working to re-float it.

Owned by Trinity Marine, operating as Whitsunday Rent A Yacht and Sunsail, it is thought to have collapsed late last night.

"It was okay at 9pm because we had some customers that were sleeping aboard one of the vessels that are alongside our dock," group general manager Sedron Hooper said.

Mr Hooper was called by the harbour master at around 7am this morning, alerting him to the accident.

A shed on the jetty was used as a maintenance area, housing sealed containers of used oil.

"We've got a salvage team that had a look at it this morning and at the moment it's all about containment," Mr Hooper said.

"If there is any residue it will probably just be residue from the top of the drums.

"We certainly haven't seen much oil at this time or any spillage."

It is not yet known what caused the jetty to sink.

"We're not sure if the frame's been dislodged in some fashion or if there's been a puncture of the pontoons, or if the pontoons have started leaking," Mr Hooper said.

"There was some settlement (of the jetty) we know about, but this is a dramatic deterioration in that."

The salvage crews estimate they will have the jetty floating again and stabilised by the end of the day, but in the meantime the charter companies have been approved to operate from the nearby Shute Harbour Jetty.

"The main concern of course is the environment and we've taken the appropriate precaution measures," Mr Hooper said.

"We've had (national) parks down this morning, they've had a look at it.

"They seem to be reasonably happy with the steps that we've taken so far."
