The moment a mummified man is discovered at sea

A CREW member of Clipper boat LMAX Exchange was the first to discover the mummified body of German sailor Manfred Fritz Bajorat.

Reports hit the internet in early February of a stricken yacht containing the mummified remains of the German sailor frozen in the act of sending one final Mayday.

Images of the sailor's body and personal affects went up online after LMAX Exchange intercepted the de-masted boat floating off the coast of the Philippines - LMAX logged the vessel's coordinates and continued racing.

The yacht named Sayo was then discovered by fisherman about 60 miles off the coast of Surigao del Sur, in the Philippines.

It was from this encounter that photos of the dead man emerged.

An autopsy on March 4 revealed Bajorat had died of a heart attack only a week before.

It is believed that a combination of tropical heat, dry wind, and salty sea quickly preserved or mummified the corpse.

Media reports form the UK accused the Clipper yacht of failing to render assistance to the vessel.

This is disputed by the Clipper company and is evidenced by the video footage.

"On 31 January, the LMAX Exchange team ceased competition during Race 7 of the Clipper 2015-16 ...(race) to examine an abandoned yacht found drifting in its path," the Clipper  statement read.

"After boarding the drifting vessel, we unfortunately discovered the body of a lone sailor.  We remained on site, under instruction, until released by the USCG who continued with the recovery."

The video that accompanies this story was supplied by Clipper and stops just before the crew member makes the grisly discovery.
