CLOSED: Customers mourn loss of much-loved gift store
CUSTOMERS are mourning the loss of a much-loved gift store on the Sunshine Coast as it prepares to close its doors this month.
Home decor and clothing shop Vanilla Salt will no longer be trading at Stockland Birtinya after 14 months of operating.
Owner Robyn Hincenbergs said she was forced to close the shop due to dwindling customer support.
"We're closing because we're just not busy enough," she said.
"Christmas was quite good. It's just that people in general don't know that we're here."
Mrs Hincenbergs said the store was struggling to compete with online retail, as more shoppers opted to buy their gifts on the web.
"People are shopping on the net and we're sort of an old-fashioned store," she said.
The Sunshine Coast woman said customers were expressing their sadness over the closure "all day long".
"It is sad," she said. "There's a lot of shops that are closing and you need to really have a lot of customers to support the rent."
Vanilla Salt is offering 30 per cent off its stock until it finishes trading on January 25, the day before Australia Day.
Mrs Hincenbergs hoped her loyal customers would make the trip to Caloundra and support Vanilla Salt's sister store, Kitchen Bar and More, after the closure.
"I want to say thanks to all of our customers who did support us," she said.
"We have some really lovely people here.
"I'm hoping they all go over to Caloundra."
