Brisbane ready to go no matter how A-league season ends

WITH his team already cemented in the A-League finals thanks to Perth Glory's banishment as a result of salary cap breaches, Brisbane Roar interim coach Frans Thijssen is likely to rest several key players for tonight's final regular season game against the Newcastle Jets.

The Roar squad only arrived home from China yesterday morning following its 1-0 Asian Champions League win over Beijing Guoan.

Backing up against the Jets a day later is a tall order, but with the third-placed Glory relegated to seventh by the FFA, Brisbane will finish sixth and grab the final spot in the play-offs, regardless of tonight's result against bottom side Newcastle.

While the Roar was impressive in downing Beijing to keep its Champions League hopes alive, it seems the result was not enough to keep Thijssen in the top job, or even at the club, beyond this season.

Vice-chairman Chris Fong told SBS the 63-year-old would not have a role at the Roar once the new head coach was appointed.

"We're going to have a fairly fresh approach next season and we'll get to that when we are ready," he said.

"Frans has always been an interim coach and we're grateful for what he has done for the club."

Fong also denied former Adelaide United coach Aurelio Vidmar was set to take over the top job.

"I smile at all these rumours. I read that one and I don't know anything about it," Fong said. "We won't be announcing anything just yet ... we want to get the season out of the way first."
