Coaches reveal tactics in lead-up to finals week
RUGBY LEAGUE: Footy fever's officially ramped up in the South Burnett with the rugby league competition's finals kickstarting this weekend.
On Saturday, August 24, the Murgon Mustangs will host the semi finals at their home ground with the first game starting at 8.30am.
Murgon Mustangs A Grade coach Paul Brunjes said he was looking forward to a great day of junior and senior rugby league.
"It's been a while since we have hosted the finals," Brunjes said.
"This year there hasn't been much difference of competition in A Grade league with some strong sides performing each week.
"At this stage the premiership is anyone's to win."
With his A Grade squad set for a match-up between Cherbourg at 3.45pm, Brunjes said it would be a great clash.
"They are always hard to beat, especially in the finals," Brunjes said.
"Our strength is when we are attacking and so is theirs.
"Cherbourg brings a lot to the game so it's going to be a tough one," he said.
Brunjes said the team was looking in-shape for the weekend, despite having to replace a few players with injuries from last weekend's game.
Amongst all the action the Under 16s Murgon Mustangs will play their last fixed game for the season against Toowoomba Souths.
"It was a nice coincidence that they had their last game for the year in the South Burnett so it could link up with the semi finals at home," Brunjes said.
The other A Grade clash will be Kingaroy Red Ants vs Wondai Wolves at 2pm.
Kingaroy Red Ants coach Ryan Sutherland said he was looking forward to a big day of bush footy after having to overcome some challenges this season.
"We have a few injuries but everyone will probably have those going into finals," Sutherland said.
"There's always plenty of things we can do better each week.
"Getting the same team on the paddock has probably been our hardest thing this year."
Sutherland said going into the semis the team needed to focus on their defensive work.
"Wondai's strength is that they keep trying," Sutherland said.
"We played them last week and we were up 26-6 at half time, but then let them back into the game.
"We just need to keep defending for the whole game," he said.
