Coast FIFO miner launches men's gym wear range

HOW does one respond to being told your job and income of 17 years will be no more in three short years?

You can twiddle your thumbs and pray or take action to carve out your own future.

It was Craig Holzigal who was faced with that do-or-die situation.

Along with his brother Matt - a Landsborough miner working FIFO in Central Queensland - the duo started what they hope will soon become their sole focus.

 

Smashing Fibres, a men's gym and street wear apparel company, will launch on January 5, three years after Craig's shock redundancy discover.

"It was a big, big shock and I still have moments where I struggle to fathom (what happened)," Craig said.

"I was there for 17 years, not just two, so it wasn't an easy transition. Going from a secure income that you know will stop is hard.

"But going down this road is exciting."

After considering several business ventures they settled on a clothing brand, which they say can plug a gap in the market.

The past 12 months have been meticulous designing, planning, testing and setting up their business.

"We'd always spoken about doing something together for years, we just didn't know what," Matt said.

"And we ended up doing research without knowing it. We'd look at what males were wearing in the gym and it was either high-vis stuff straight from work or not knowing what to wear.

"The women's range is massive, but males all over the shop."

Their name goes back to their days as bachelors where they'd say "lets go smash some fibres", similar to pumping iron.

Now seven products from tees, singlets to shorts, will be launched next week, clothing that is easily transferable from gym to coffee shop or vice versa.

"We were very picky with how we wanted the product to feel and we sent a fair few products back," Matt said.

"It gives guys a versatile product that will last. It is a nice clean design that you could throw on with a pair of jeans and wear to the pub."

While they know it is early days, the big picture is a wharehouse selling their brand to the masses.
