Fitter taps into Antarctic adventure for green future
THE coldest place on Earth ignites a fire in the belly of Patrick Orr, a Gladstone local determined to realise his dreams in the most barren of environments.
The plumber and gas fitter will embark on a two-week expedition in October to become the fastest human to reach the South Pole by ski, and to encourage governments, businesses and individuals to strive to achieve 100% renewable energies by 2020.
Twenty-eight-year-old Patrick is in the depths of intense training in anticipation of his two-week adventure, where he will combat mental and physical challenges most of us will not encounter in our life times.
"Nothing can simulate the severe weather conditions of the Antarctic," he said.
"Here in Gladstone I do CrossFit every day, outdoor activities like pulling weights behind me to simulate a sled that I will be pulling once I'm on the ice.
"The sled will weigh about 80kg which will carry my food for the journey, camping equipment and survival equipment."
