Community to fight for Eidsvold hospital

EIDSVOLD residents are expected to turn out in force to fight for their hospital.
A community meeting on Monday night looks set to fill the town hall as the community meets to discuss the future of the hospital.

Eidsvold Hospital Auxiliary secretary Dot Hamilton said people as far as Bundaberg would be attending.

"We've received a terrific amount of support… every man and his dog will be there," she said.

"There's bus loads coming, car loads are coming, whole households are coming."

The reaction follows the release of a proposal by the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service suggesting a consolidation of "beds at Mundubbera Multipurpose Health Service and to provide primary care facilities at Eidsvold".

But a joint statement from Health Minister Lawrence Springborg, HHS Chair Gary Kirk and Member for Callide Jeff Seeney said the search for replacement staff at Eidsvold hospital "will be redoubled in an effort to address long-running problems with their multi-purpose health centre".

"We need to work together to find a lasting solution that protects access to the multipurpose health centre and rebuilds community confidence," Mr Seeney said.

During a media conference in Emerald on Friday morning, when questioned about the potential closure of Moura hospital, Premier Campbell Newman said neither it nor Eidsvold Hospital would close.

"We're committed to maintain health services in those communities," he said.

Queensland Nurses Union Wide Bay Regional Organiser Vicky Smyth met with Eidsvold hospital staff today to discuss their concerns.

"Even if they don't close the hospital it doesn't mean they won't close some aspects, we don't want to see any reductions in services," she said.

"The staff are very passionate about the potential closing.

"They are concerned about the elderly residents, they are not happy about any potential of moving them away from the town."

The meeting will begin at 7pm on Monday.
