Community group rally for new honour for Roy Emerson

THE achievements of Roy Emerson speak for themselves, with the former world number one tennis star having won titles at all four grand slam events in singles and doubles and six consecutive Australian Open men's singles titles to his name, just to name a few.

His home town of Blackbutt are looking to secure another honour for the 82-year-old with the Blackbutt Tourism and Heritage Society working to name a section of the D'Aguilar Highway as Roy Emerson Way.

Secretary Jackie Ross said tourists regularly stop to snap a photo at Emerson's statue in town and to learn more about him at the museum bearing his name and this would further enhance the attraction for tourists.

"We feel that he needs to be honoured. We have tried before with a petition in parliament and after he received an Order of Australia we thought it was all the more deserved,” she said.

South Burnett Regional Council endorsed the idea at its July 17 meeting and will advocate with the department of main roads for the name change.

Council applauded the initiative from the community group for recognising the tourism aspect of the decision to recognise the sportsman who came hails from the region.

Council wanted to reassure residents who live on the section of the D'Aguilar Highway their address would remain the same and the name of Roy Emerson Way would sit on top, alike Darren Lockyer Way on the Warrego Highway.
