Competition still strong at Casino’s weekly cattle sale

NUMBERS remained steady for a yarding of 1948 cattle at Casino on Wednesday.

About 1200 young cattle were sold, including a good number of medium-weight vealers, a fair few light and heavy veal, and a few less yearlings week-on-week.

Quality was good, with mainly prime veal offered, although there were a few plain vealers.

The yarding of grown cattle consisted mainly of cows.

Competition remained strong with the best of the light veal topping at 315c, while medium weights sold 319-440c, averaging 330c/kg. Heavy vealers sold to 330c/kg, restocker vealer steers were down 4-6c, selling to 387c/kg. Restocker yearling steers sold to 326c/kg.

The yarding of export cattle consisted mainly of cows, along with several pens of grown steers and heifers. Quality was fairly good with several pens of well-finished bullocks and steers, along with some good runs of medium and heavy weight high-yielding cows.

Grown steers and bullocks sold to 280c/kg.

The cow market saw little change, however some pens of high-yielding cows met keener demand. Medium-weight cows averaged 220c, while heavy weights sold to 240c/kg.
