Conservative Christensen accepts Safe Schools gutting

CONSERVATIVE Coalition backbencher George Christensen has accepted proposed changes to the controversial Safe Schools gender diversity program.

Mr Christensen played a key role in a backbench petition this week urging Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to cut the program's funding and initiate an inquiry into it.

But after Education Minister Simon Birmingham released the report of a review into the program yesterday, Mr Christensen said he was satisfied with some proposed changes.

Senator Birmingham said the content of the program, which aimed to battle bullying of LGBTI students, would be peer-reviewed and parts of the content used in primary schools would be cut from education materials.

However, Sen Birmingham also said he remained concerned about the tone of the debate.

He urged caution among his political colleagues when commenting on such sensitive subjects.
