Cooper never thought he’d play professionally
GAVIN Cooper never imagined a career in rugby league when he was playing for the Murgon Mustangs but now is 80 minutes away from winning an NRL premiership.
If it hadn't been for older brother Dustin taking Cooper to training with the Redcliffe Dolphins after a stint in South Australia, he might not be playing for the North Queensland Cowboys on Sunday.
"I moved in with my brother and he said 'why don't you come along to training?'," Cooper said.
Cooper said his brother Dustin inspired him to play.
Murgon born and bred, Cooper played 14 years for the Murgon Mustangs and said his age group won everything there was.
"Still have a few close mates from those days; my age group was pretty successful, we won everything there was to win," Cooper said.
"That's what footy is all about - playing with your mates."
Cooper said the team was focused on playing its own game against the Broncos.
"They are a great team, (we) played them three weeks ago, only made a couple of errors. We just have to play our game," he said.
Cooper said his mum, dad and sister would make it to the game and older brother Dustin would fly home from France to go to the game.
"I'm very much looking forward to having them here, it's going to be a big weekend," Cooper said.
"Just enjoying the week, is something, it's my tenth year of NRL it's taken this long to get to a GF (Grand Final) and enjoy everything the week brings."
