Council votes unanimously to find ways to help save koalas

FRASER Coast councillors have unanimously voted to investigate how to save koalas in the region which are in critically low numbers.

Division 10 councillor George Seymour moved a motion in Wednesday's council meeting to investigate habitat corridors, mapping, planning controls, land acquisitions and dog control.

The motion was passed by all eight councillors present at the meeting.

He also called for the council to investigate ecotourism opportunities.

"There is a very clear and present danger that koalas will become extinct locally," he said.

The motion comes after a koala habitat in Tinana was bulldozed by developers, who had conditional approval for the work, last week.

Koala rescue volunteers estimated two hectares of native bushland in Henderson Park were affected when a dozer driver started knocking down trees without warning last Tuesday.
