Council 'well on the way' to delivering on roads promise

SOUTH Burnett Regional Council is well on its way to delivering on its promise to residents that every dirt road in the region will be graded or have its surface upgraded by December.

Councillor Gavin Jones, who oversees the roads and drainage portfolio, said with gravel sheeting or a heavy formation grade to be completed on 12 roads by August council the end-of-year goal is within reach.

"The promise and the commitment that we made to the community on our listening tours, and after conversations, we are well on the way to achieving the promise we made of every dirt road being graded or having some sort of surface before December this year,” he said at council's July 17 meeting.

The heavy formation grade on Memerambi Gordonbrook Rd was brought forward to July due to a number of requests from residents and is expected to be completed this month.

Mayor Keith Campbell credited the commitment from council's roads team towards achieving the goal.

"It has been a journey and I think the big learning is that we as a council got to truly understand the situation with our roads throughout the region and truly understood what was needed by ways of dollars and cents to apply towards the road network,” he said.

Cr Jones said while the council was working on repairing the surface of roads there continues to be confusion among South Burnett residents about whether roads are state or council owned.

"We get a considerable number of customer requests coming in and unfortunately they are about state roads,” he said.

"We have to lobby the state to get the money to fix that. They ring council and complain about them, and it is our responsibility I am not denying that, but it a fact that we have to lobby to state government.”
