Cows, calves at lowest numbers for store sale
ANOTHER big crowd attended the monthly store cattle sale at Lismore Saleyards last Saturday.
A small yarding of 320 cattle sold on a strong market.
Two-year-old steers topped at $1456, milk-teeth santa steers at $1186 and weaners to $929. The majority of the weaners were about 200kg and sold from $2.85-$3.26/kg.
Weaner heifers sold well but not to the highs of last month's sale.
Brangus heifers possibly in calf sold for $1400 and young cows to $1480.
It was the lowest number of cows and calves offered at a Lismore sale in years and the 30 sold like hot cakes, ranging in price from $1200 to $1660.
At the Tuesday fat sale, prices eased across most categories by 10c/kg but once again the vealers weighed well and returns were good.
Prime medium vealers generally sold from $2.85 to $3.10/kg.
A draft of heavy charolais-cross vealers off Grevillia near Kyogle topped the day at $3.18/kg, returning $954.
The cow market was 6-10c/kg cheaper than last week.
Gavin and Kathy Robb's friesian cows sold for $2.20/kg, returning $1464.
John and Sue Wraight sold a brindle brahman-cross cow for $2.22/kg ($1355).
We're reaching the end of the summer grass growing season and while prices are good it's a great time to unload any unproductive cattle or ones with a bad temperament.
