Darling Downs man helps Santa write letters to 300 children

SANTA Claus can't respond to every child's letter at Christmas time - that's why he asks Jonathan Scott to help him out.

The former Cecil Plains man has helped pen letters to more than 300 children across Australia, acting as Santa's helper to spread festive cheer.

Mr Scott, who is studying an education degree in Newcastle, said he was enlisted by St Nick three years ago, using Facebook to offer his services.

Since then, he was helped Santa write to children as far away as Western Australia.

"If I was doing it as a profitable business, I probably would've stopped - this year I don't even think I even broke even,” Mr Scott said.

"The main reason I do it is to see the encouragement those kids get from the letter.

"Encouragement was probably the big thing that I try to put in.”

The letter will consist of prompts from the parents, as well as comments from the big man himself.

Some of the requests have been heart-breaking.

"The first year, a dad asked me to write to their still-born son - that was probably the saddest,” Mr Scott said.

"He said it would comfort the mother to know that their baby was on Santa's nice-list.”

Regardless of the reasons, Mr Scott says he knows the children appreciate it.

"Plenty of parents have sent me photos or videos of them getting the letter,” he said.

"One lady sent me a picture of her kid who had gone to sleep with the letter that night.”
