Sports Minister wants to force school kids into exercising

SPORTS Minister and Buderim MP Steve Dickson wants to export the Sunshine Coast's passion for fitness to the rest of the state, forcing children to have up to 30 minutes of physical activity when at school.

Sports Minister Steve Dickson discussed the concept with Member for Noosa Glen Elmes and a group of delegates from Buderim and Noosa, who joined the politicians discussing the Queensland Plan in Brisbane yesterday.

Mr Dickson said the concept of mandating between 15-30 minutes of physical activity for all school children was "resonating" with him.

He vowed to raise the matter with new Federal Sports Minister Peter Dutton.

"I would love nothing better than to see part of our education system put aside time for physical activity," Mr Dickson said.

"The last thing I want to see is them becoming obese and a burden on the health system and on themselves."

Mr Dickson said it would be "one of many" ideas that would come from his table during the summit.

Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the room, the challenge of lifestyle issues was confronting Mackay Mayor Deirdre Comerford.

Cr Comerford - who describes herself as overweight - said the Central Queens-land community's incidence of obesity and smokers was far too high.

"We have more information on health issues than ever before," she said.

"We need to create an atmosphere so people help themselves."
