Dozens turn out for funeral of alleged FNQ murder victim

AN Innisfail man has been remembered as a "free spirit" who lived life on his own terms as family and friends said goodbye almost two weeks after his alleged murder.

More than 100 people packed the Blacks Funerals chapel at Innisfail yesterday to pay tribute to father-of-three Raymond Smerdelj, 32.

It comes after he was allegedly fatally stabbed in an Edith St unit on October 3 following an altercation at a party.

Local man Clay Stone, 30, has been charged with his murder.

Mr Smerdelj's cousin Lachlan Grant delivered a eulogy at the service and said Mr Smerdelj's young children, Kosta, Scarlett and Seth, meant the world to him - almost as much as fishing.

"Ray loved his fishing almost as much as he loved his family - spending almost every afternoon going for a fish," he said.

He said his cousin also had an infectious laugh.

"He was always up for a good time," he said.

"But despite always being up for a good time, he was also one of the hardest workers I have ever seen, never questioning any task he was asked to do."

Police investigations into the incident are continuing.

Innisfail police Det Sgt Matt Bauer confirmed a man sought as potentially a key witness was helping police.

He said police called for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage who was driving near the unit complex about 6pm to come forward.
