'Star falls for spin again'

OPINION

Why does a smart, beautiful, independently wealthy woman like Deborah Hutton keep falling for men who fall foul of the law?

That's the question that has been preoccupying Sydney's social class - and Hutton's friends - since the former model's latest boyfriend, meditation mystic Andrew Marsh, appeared in Waverley Local Court on Tuesday to defend two counts of common assault and one of intentionally choking a person after a violent attack on two unnamed Sydneysiders.

Yesterday Hutton confirmed she would stick by Marsh who, she said, was "under immense pressure".

"Andrew is a spiritual meditation teacher and healer who over many years has helped and supported hundreds of people going through challenging periods in their lives and he has been a great help to me," she told The Saturday Telegraph.

"He hit a rough patch many months ago and it's been an extraordinarily challenging year for him personally, for his family and everybody involved.

"Andrew was locked out of his house, so he has stayed with friends, he has stayed with me and he has potentially stayed in his car during this difficult time."

Marsh's "challenging year" took a turn for the worst last Monday when at around 9am he allegedly assaulted two people in a Sydney home. Marsh has pleaded not guilty to the assault charges and guilty to cocaine possession.

According to sources, Hutton asked him to move out of her Bronte house 24 hours before the alleged incident.

On Tuesday, Marsh gave Hutton's address as his own to Waverley Court. And so the intrigue into Hutton's private life continues, confounding even her closest friends.

Hutton has long had a soft spot for larrikins. In the '90s she embarked on an 11-year relationship with entrepreneur Harry M. Miller, a brash opportunist who served 10 months in jail in 1982 after being convicted of misappropriating $728,000 in funds after the ticketing company he founded, Computicket, went into receivership.

While Miller's crime was well behind him when the couple met, she fell for him, the one-time Grace Bros model the embodiment of a marketer's dream girl.

Master spruiker Miller was a salesman par excellence and the one commodity he sold best - and never stopped selling, even decades after he found his niche selling knitwear and frying pans in the 1950s and later promoting musical theatre and performers in the 1960s and '70s - was himself.

Like Miller, Hutton's next long-term boyfriend, Robert Dulhunty, also backed himself into business venture after business venture, with some 20 companies registered by him over two decades.

Two of them - fragrance distribution company Jasham International and Healthzone Solutions - went into administration.

Dulhunty's business interests were as varied as Miller's and among his greatest passions would be Hutton, who he fell for around 2012.

Unable to cope when the relationship soured and she asked him to move out of her house in 2018, Dulhunty embarked on a plan he hoped might persuade Hutton to keep him around for a bit longer, with Dulhunty faking a break-in at her house.

In early 2019 he was charged with six offences, including stalking and intimidation, and property damage after he planted a "rape kit" at Hutton's home.

Dulhunty admitted to having mental health problems and being on prescription medication at the time of his crime.

While Hutton and Miller never lived together - something both parties indicated was at their behest - she softened when she embarked on her next relationship with former Hockeyroo star Danni Roche, who she met in 1998.

The two women bought a home together in Tamarama and lived happily together until their break-up in 2007, one that looks a model break-up compared to those of recent years.
