A 69-YEAR-OLD man's mobility issues were increased after he was charged for drink driving while seated in his personal scooter.

Concerned citizens called police after they detected a strong smell of liquor on the man's breath as he made his way through a Southern Downs town.

Stanthorpe police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said the incident was the first time he knew of someone being charged for drink driving while in a mobility scooter.

He said citizens were concerned the man might hurt someone or himself during his travels on Thursday afternoon last week.

Officers found the man in the carpark of Stanthorpe Plaza and he was breathalysed.

Snr Sgt Ireland said the man returned a reading of 0.069 per cent.

His scooter was secured at the shopping centre while the man was taken to the police station.

"Some of these things can travel up to 22kmh," Snr Sgt Ireland said.

"This is a reminder to all that drink driving offences relate to all forms of vehicles, not just cars and motor bikes."

The man is due to appear in Stanthorpe Magistrates Court on August 20.
