Driver ‘distraught’ after girl hit by car

A SCHOOLGIRL'S condition has stabilised after being hit by a four-wheel drive.

The eight-year-old was severely injured when she walked into the path of a Toyota LandCruiser after getting off her school bus on Kilrie Rd, Ayr, at 3.30pm on Tuesday.

She suffered cuts and broken bones. She was flown to Townsville Hospital in a critical condition but has since improved.

Townsville forensic crash unit officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Robert Nolder said investigators believed the collision was not the driver's fault.

"She had just got off a school bus with a number of other children and it's believed she was either running or walking quickly across the road," Sen-Sgt Nolder said.

"The driver of the vehicle wasn't travelling very quickly and he was paying attention to the fact that the bus had pulled over. It is unfortunate that this has occurred but these things do happen when kids aren't aware to look and to take their time."

Sen-Sgt Nolder said parents needed to educate children about road safety and everyone in the community had to keep an eye out for children.

He said the driver of the vehicle provided first aid to the girl at the scene but was deeply shaken by the experience.

"He is absolutely distraught," Sen-Sgt Nolder said.

Meanwhile, Sen-Sgt Nolder said the family of the young girl was remaining positive.

"I spoke to her mother last night - she's doing well, hoping for the best and expecting the child to have a full recovery as quickly as possible," he said.

This comes just three weeks after a four-year-old boy was killed when hit by a car in the carpark of Kingpin Bowling in Kirwan.
