Drunk driver fined after Mount Morgan car crash

HE managed to escape from his smashed car after a traffic crash in Mount Morgan, but Ryan Robert Sigvart couldn't escape from Rockhampton Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Magistrate Michael O'Driscoll said Sigvert was fortunate to be standing in front of him, after pleading guilty to drink driving, driving without due care and failing to wait at the scene of a crash.

"You could have lost a limb, suffered a brain injury or worse, you could have be in the dock there because you injured a third person," he said.

Around 10.30pm on February 24 Sigvart was driving along James St when he lost control of his Holden Commodore, drove onto the wrong side of the road and clipped a tree.

His car flipped onto its roof after he crashed through a steel fence and landed in a culvert near the intersection of James St and East St extended.

Police found black tyre marks near the bend where his car skidded out of control, but Sigvart had disappeared.

He was later found by police at a Mount Morgan Hotel, smelling of liquor and with cuts and grazes.

His father was also at the hotel, and they became argumentative with police.

After being arrested Sigvart recorded a BAC of 0.05%.

Be told police he was driving at 85km/h in the 60km/h zone because he was in a hurry to get to Gracemere to see his sick grandmother.

He said he lost control because one of his rear tyres was bald.

He then left the scene of the crash because he wanted to have a wash.

Sigvart was fined a total of $1650 for the three charges and ordered to pay $2412 restitution for the fence.
