Man charged for stealing bauble off city Christmas tree

AN EMBARRASSED 21-year-old has faced court charged with stealing a decoration off the Ipswich City Christmas tree.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court this week, David Robert Trevor pleaded guilty to the crime.

The former groundskeeper stole a bauble from the five-metre high tree at d'Arcy Doyle Place about 1am on November 29.

The incident took place after Trevor and a friend were denied entry at a nearby nightclub due to their attire.

Police prosecutor Sergent Trevor Perry said the theft was seen on Safe City cameras and the young man was found by police soon after, bauble in hand.

Defence lawyer Yassar Khan said Trevor was drunk at the time of the offence and embarrassed by his actions.

Mr Khan said it was the first time his client has ever appeared before a court.

Ipswich Magistrate Deborah Vasta it was a case of "stupid" behaviour brought on by drinking alcohol.

Trevor was let off with a warning and not further punished. No convictions were recorded.
