Duboisia processing plant expansion shows faith in region

A NEW duboisia processing plant will soon replace the existing plant for Alkaloids of Australia Pty Ltd.

This comes after the South Burnett Regional Council agreed for the change of use of the Memerambi property at the corner of Oil Seed Rd and Postles Rd during its general meeting today.

Councillor Terry Fleischfresser said the proposed expansion would make alkaloids one of the biggest businesses in the region.

"This is one of the properties bordering on one of the biggest businesses in the South Burnett,” Cr Fleischfresser said.

The processing plant extracts medical-grade alkaloid from the duboisia plant, a native plant grown on plantations throughout the region.

The subject site is about 7.54ha in area and currently has an alkaloid-processing plant in the southeastern section of the site, on land in the special industry zone.

The business now consists of several buildings, sheds and chemical and gas storage structures, and the company plans to expand.

"With the company's business expanding, the first stage of the upgrade process includes the construction of a new open-sided shed with a floor area of approximately 4541sq m that will be used for the storage of raw material (leaf) under cover,” Cr Fleischfresser said.

The new development will include the fit-out of a shed and progressively decommission the existing plant, which will then be replaced by new equipment.

"This development proposal, like many others, demonstrates a strong confidence in the South Burnett as a region for investment and support for the local rural primary economy,” Cr Fleischfresser said.

The proposal is defined as a special industry application under the South Burnett Regional Council planning scheme.

The site is located within the Memerambi township and is split-zoned.

The western portion is in the rural zone and the eastern portion is in the special industry zone.

It will be bound by Postles Rd to the south and Oil Seeds Rd to the east.

The land to the north of the site is within the township zone, however it is largely undeveloped.

The land to the west and south of the site is in the rural zone, which is compromised of unimproved lots, agriculture and some rural residential activities.
