Dutch goalkeeper keeps Kookaburras at bay

THE Kookaburras were held to a 0-0 draw by the Netherlands at the Champions Trophy yesterday.

The Australians tried all they could to secure a second straight win after beating Belgium 4-2 on Saturday.

But they were kept at bay by Dutch goalkeeper Jaap Stockmann on Sunday.

Stockmann came up with a number of world-class saves at Melbourne's State Hockey Centre.

Earlier England provided the shock of the tournament by downing Olympic gold medallists Germany 4-1, the first time England had beaten the Germans at Champions Trophy level.

Goals to Adam Dixon, Harry Martin and Henry Weir gave England a 3-1 lead at half-time, Germany's reply coming from an own goal by Richard Smith.

The chances of the young German side making a comeback took a hit after the break when Niklas Grell was given a red card, before Darren Cheesman sealed the win for England.

Also yesterday, Pakistan bounced back from its 3-1 loss to the Netherlands on day one to down Belgium 2-0.

The competition resumes tomorrow after a rest day today.
