Elliott breaks Games record as Aussie teens finish one-two

SWIMMING: Two teenagers have further underlined the bright future of Australian swimming at the Paralympics.

Maddison Elliott won gold in the 100m S8 freestyle ahead of fellow Australian Lakeisha Patterson.

Both are only 17 years old.

Elliott (pictured) said she went into the race with great focus and was super stoked with how things went.

Out on the pool deck she listened to music before taking in the noise of the crowd and then turning the focus back to herself.

"I was a bit worried because there was a Brazilian in the race, so the crowd was really bizarre,” she said.

"I just had to focus on my own event, my own race and my race plan, so that's what I did ... and I managed to get a Paralympic record as well.”

Patterson, who had already won a gold in Rio, was delighted to snare the silver.

"It was a really good race for me. I managed to do a personal best, which was awesome,” she said, adding it was great to swim alongside Elliott.

"Our whole team philosophy is my team, my family, so to be able to get out there and race and still focus on yourself while sharing the success is awesome.”

Both swimmers have further individual and team events on their programs at the Paralympics.
