More employment opportunities for migrants under new scheme

MIGRANTS and refugees who have settled in Queensland will now have access to greater employment opportunities under a government scheme designed to attract workers to the state's agriculture sector.

The Queensland Government has joined forces with beef producers Stanbroke in a partnership that will provide employment opportunities for migrants and refugees.

The Lockyer Valley company is the largest privately-owned beef business in the world with properties across the state.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Glen Elmes said on today the partnership will generate sustainable job opportunities for culturally diverse Queenslanders.

"Queensland reaps significant economic and social benefits from the skills, knowledge and ingenuity generations of migrants have contributed to developing the state and enriching its social and cultural profile," he said.

"Migrants and refugees are a ready and motivated asset for regional businesses who find it difficult to get and retain staff."

Mr Elmes said he hoped the partnership would entice other companies and industries across the state to adopt similar schemes to ensure regional communities remain strong and prosperous.

"For places like Toowoomba, Rockhampton and our mining and agricultural hubs, new partnerships like this will help make this vision a reality," he said.

"We will continue to facilitate opportunities that deliver jobs for culturally diverse Queenslanders."
