OPINION: End of an era for tide guide

FOR almost 25 years Queensland anglers have relied on the little orange tide guide for all their tide, fish ID and size information, but sadly, no more.

Hervey Bay-based Great Outdoors Publications have ceased publication due to falling sales and increasing costs over recent years and the endless availability of information online, in phone apps and modern GPS.

It's sad to see this era come to and end. For thousands of local anglers, it was almost considered a bible that they lived by, planned weekends and holidays around and studied for hours on end.

Many bought two or even three copies to keep at home, in the car and boat. For once-a-year fishers it held all the information they needed and was the first item they picked up when they walked in.

We have already sourced replacement Tide Guides from a national supplier that cover a wider area, have more information including knots and "bite" times and as always will have our local tide guide available, but will miss the little old orange book and. We are sad to see the decline of another small localised company.

This follows the Queensland Government's decision to cease production of tide tables and the Beacon to Beacon book two years ago for similar reasons.
