Fatality sparks call for highway upgrade

THE death of an 83-year-old Gympie man on the Bruce Hwy at Six Mile on Sunday has prompted a call for fast tracking of four lanes to Gympie.

On Sunday morning the man's northbound Hyundai i20 crossed into the path of a southbound Toyota Landcruiser.

He died on impact.

The section of road, outside the Roadcraft Driver Education Centre, is one of the only stretches of highway south of Gympie that doesn't have the painted one-metre-wide rumble strip designed to keep cars apart.

Gympie Regional Council deputy mayor Tony Perrett has called for action on design and funding of Section D1 of the

Cooroy-to-Curra bypass.

Cr Perrett said section D1 would link the Bruce Hwy south of Gympie across to the Gympie Connection Rd (coast road).

"The upgrade of the Bruce Hwy to double lanes will not only improve road safety, it will save lives," Cr Perrett said.

"The Federal Government budget commitment to fund this upgrade is very welcome, but their forward planning must now extend to the design and funding for the next section.

"This will provide many local benefits, but more importantly will help prevent the needless loss of life."

Since the new section of double-lane highway was opened south of Gympie no fatalities have been recorded improving driver safety.
