Faulty signal leads rescuers on wild-goose chase

RESCUE services were led on a wild-goose chase this morning after an emergency beacon was accidentally activated at Eungella Dam.

An RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman said a man set off an EPIRB at the dam, 110km west of Mackay.

She said a recuse helicopter crew left the base at 6.30am on the hour-long trip to check in with the man who was left holding the faulty device.

"The guy accidentally set it off but couldn't turn it off," she said.

"This was a freak accident.

She said the flight would not cut into the not-for-profit's bottom line, with the Federal Government covering flight costs for EPIRB activations.

"When an EPIRB goes we can recoup that money," she said.

She said adventurers should make sure they check their emergency devices, make sure they were not expired and well maintained.

"They are very handy to have in an emergency,' she said.
