'Significant blunder': PM's big tax slip-up

WHILE Scott Morrison was delighted to announce his Budget had been given the tick of approval there was one small detail that tripped him up.

Mr Morrison has previously said the low and middle income tax offset could be approved administratively so there would be no barrier to people receiving them.

But PEFO today noted that legislation was required to be passed before July 1 for the tax offsets to go ahead.

Asked about this in a press conference today, Mr Morrison said: "What happens traditionally with the tax office is where there is a bipartisan commitment to matters that they can often go ahead and admit the tax arrangements on that basis.

"There are measures they've been able to do that. It is our intention to legislate them."

He said the government had been successful in legislating tax relief in last year's Budget and would be successful again.

ABC radio host Patricia Karvelas asked Liberal Senator Simon Birmingham about the issue this afternoon.
"The Prime Minister originally said the low-and middle-income tax offsets wouldn't have to be legislated be they do. That's a significant blunder isn't it?" she asked.

Simon Birmingham answered: "There's plenty of time to make sure there we put in place the tax measures we're taking to this election and we are very confident that if we're elected we'll have a clear plan date."
