Fire crews battle fierce chemical blaze in Carole Park

FACTORIES in Carole Park have been destroyed in a massive chemical blaze believed to be sparked by nearby grass fire.

More than 20 crews responded to the out-of-control building fire occupied by Viscount Plastics at Cobalt St on Sunday, about 3.15pm.

Support was called from Brisbane units, including Inala, to help extinguish the flames which spread to the adjoining property.

Police closed Cobalt St and nearby roads as large plumes of black smoke billowed hundreds of metres into the air over Springfield and Camira.

Fire services were kept busy on Sunday with several grass and vegetation fires at Redbank Plains Rd and Austin St, New Chum, Swanbank Rd, Swanbank, Eugene St, Bellbird Park and Centenary Highway Springfield Lakes.

Crews also monitored an inaccessible large tyre fire burning in bushland near Swanbank Power Station, which erupted about 12.45pm. The area between Redbank Plains Rd and School Rd was not accessible to firefighters who were on standby until it burnt out.

Vegetation fires reignited yesterday but were contained.
