Firebirds prepare for a familiar foe

OPINION - CLEM'S VIEW

FIREBIRDS favourite Kim Ravaillion will return to Brisbane this week and it will be bitter-sweet seeing her in the black and white of the Collingwood Magpies.

When she told us of her departure late last year, I was really disappointed to lose someone who'd not only been a key cog in our team, but also a great friend.

We had our first year at the Firebirds together in 2013 and it was unexpected she was looking elsewhere.

There had been rumblings about Rav leaving for weeks before it was confirmed.

The centre of our culture at the Firebirds is the idea you should seek challenge and be the best version of yourself on and off the court.

Rav spoke of feeling comfortable in Queensland and that a move would challenge her to be a better netballer.

As disappointed as I was to see her leave, we all understood that's what Ravvy personally thought she needed. Her reasoning was ultimately in line with our team values.

After being upset by the Vixens on the weekend, Collingwood will come out with a point to prove against us this Saturday after being branded competition favourites in pre-season.

It doesn't get any easier for me either.

I'll be marking up against another Aussie Diamond in Caitlin Thwaites, but I take a lot of confidence from my performance on the weekend against Caitlin Bassett.

After so much build-up, I kept waiting to feel the nerves and they didn't come.

I was almost nervous I wasn't nervous. I was just so excited to be out on court and couldn't wipe the smile from my face.

With upsets across round one, nothing is for certain and every week will be its own unique challenge.

As long as we can maintain intensity and concentration across all four quarters, we can beat any team put in front of us.
