Firestorm alarm as Tasmania burns

TASMANIA is facing its worst bushfire season in years with huge fuel loads across the state creating conditions similar to those in the lead-up to the disastrous 2006 East Coast blazes.

The Tasmania Fire Service is urging people to face up to the very real danger ahead in the coming months and prepare bushfire survival plans.

"We've had two relatively quiet fire seasons in recent years and we're predicting this summer will be different," TFS acting district officer Andrew McGuinness said.

"We're already seeing the results in New South Wales and Queensland where people are being evacuated due to the bushfires burning in both those states.

"In Tasmania we've already had a day of high fire danger last week with the extreme winds experienced on Thursday, and we're in a position where the fuel loads across the state, and particularly from Bicheno up along the East Coast, are heavier than we've seen in years."
