House gutted by pre-dawn fire in South Grafton

A HOUSE in South Grafton has been gutted by a potentially suspicious fire overnight.

Emergency services were called to the fire at the Maxwell Avenue premises at 3.50am.

South Grafton Fire and Rescue NSW captain Dennis Pye said they arrived to find flames coming out of the roof and the front of the building, but extinguished the fire "reasonable quickly".

A HAZMAT team from Grafton was also called to assist after asbestos was found in the building, which may or may not have been vacant.

"Two firefighters went into building when it was safe enough to do so and did a search and rescue," he said.

"Thank goodness the found no one in the building but there is extensive damage. It's a complete write-off."

Mr Pye said the front door was open when they arrived, so fire crews didn't have to force entry.

A can, possibly containing petrol or oil, was also left at the front of the house.

The scene has now been handed over to police and forensic officers, who will investigate the cause of the blaze.
