Health warning: Measles confirmed in Toowoomba

PEOPLE are being asked to check whether they could have come into contact with the person with Toowoomba's first confirmed case of the measles this year.

Darling Downs Public Health unit director Dr Penny Hutchinson said the affected individual, who was unaware she was infectious, had been to the following locations:

  • Clifford Gardens shopping centre - 9am-3pm, September 10
  • Grand Central Shopping Centre (mostly Target) - 9-11am, September 12
  • Sizzler Restaurant in Toowoomba at dinner time, September 12
  • Medical centre, James and West Sts, morning of September 13
  • Toowoomba Hospital emergency department 10am-1pm, September 13
  • a medical ward (MU1) at Toowoomba Hospital - 9-11am, September 14

Relevant authorities are following up close contacts of the case.

Dr Hutchinson advised anyone who was at those locations on the relevant dates to be on the lookout for symptoms of the disease.

"Measles is one of the most infectious of all communicable diseases and is spread by tiny droplets through coughing and sneezing," she said.

"True measles is a serious viral infection that causes fever, cough, runny nose, then a red spotty rash and sore eyes a few days later.

"Symptoms usually start around 10 days, but can occur between seven and 18 days after infection so anyone who develops measles-like symptoms within the next week or two should contact their GP for advice.

"It is very important to call the medical practice first to say you could have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading the disease to others."

Anyone who thinks they may have come into contact with the patient can call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice.

The Toowoomba case follows 14 reported measles cases elsewhere in Queensland this year.
