First Schoolkids Bonus instalment to be paid in January

PARENTS of children starting school next year have until December 31 to update their details online to ensure they get the Schoolkids Bonus in January.

Eligible families will receive up to $410 for each child in primary school, and up to $820 a year for each high school student, with the money to be paid in two instalments.

Families Minister Jenny Macklin said the scheduling of the payments was designed to deliver the money when "families need it most".

"The first Schoolkids Bonus payment comes in January, so parents only have a few weeks left to let Centrelink know that their child is starting primary school next year to get their payments on time," Ms Macklin said.

"If Centrelink doesn't know their child is starting school, families will miss out on $410.

"And if their child is starting high school we also need to know so they can get the higher secondary school payment."

The second instalment will be paid in July.

Families receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A, as well as young people in school receiving Youth Allowance, and others receiving certain income support or veterans' payments are eligible for the Schoolkids Bonus.

The Schoolkids Bonus was announced in the May budget and replaced the Education Tax Refund, which many families were no claiming.
