Five-year-old bitten by snake while playing on waterslide

FIVE-YEAR-OLD Coby Behrens spent the second night of his Rockhampton holiday in hospital after being bitten by a snake.

The youngster, visiting with his family from Townsville, was playing in the yard of his grandparents' home at Rockyview when the snake struck about 10.40am on Saturday. It was described as a black snake about 50cm long.

Coby was taken to Rockhampton Hospital, where doctors ran blood tests and admitted him for observation overnight.

"They found no result from the first blood test," Coby's grandfather Patrick Maloney said yesterday.

"The second test two hours later showed a slight infusion of venom. The third one showed a little more venom but not enough to cause any major problems, thankfully."

It is thought Coby stood on the snake when he was playing on a water slide with his three young cousins. He was bitten on the outside of his left ankle.

Coby's mum Kelly and grandmother Christine responded to the boy's cries.

They called the ambulance and applied a pressure bandage to his leg.

IF YOU SEE A SNAKE

Don't panic. Stand still and wait for the snake to move away.

If you must move, move away slowly, making no sudden movements.

Most snake bites occur when people try to catch or kill snakes.

If a snake is inside your home/workplace, keep a close watch on it until a snake catcher arrives.
