WOODFORD was invaded by a brollie-toting, wellies-clad army yesterday for the start of the Woodford Folk Festival.

Despite the wet conditions, an estimated 18,000 punters poured through the festival gates, a three per cent increase on last year's first-day attendance.

Festival regular Wazza Knapton, from Nambour, said he preferred the wet conditions.

"You've got to embrace it," he said. "There's plenty to do and (areas) to keep dry.

"A couple of years ago when they called it 'Mudford', I reckon that was the best Woodford I ever had. If you didn't like it you left, and everyone who liked it stayed."

Mr Knapton is attending the festival for the first time this year with his partner Suey Kelly and her children Gemma and Teagan Gillon. The Daily spoke to him while Gemma and Teagan were learning some acrobatics in the Circadia Tent.

"Usually you think a festival is just all pill poppers and whatever, but it's (Woodford) good for all ages," he said.

More than 100,0000 people are expected to attend across the 29th annual festival's six days, with the event culminating in the welcoming of the New Year on Thursday.
