Former Catholic brother hit with 252 child sex abuse charges

A FORMER Catholic brother, accused of repeatedly raping boys in NSW over several decades, has fronted a New Zealand court.

Bernard Kevin McGrath, 65, was arrested at Christchurch Airport and hit with 252 fresh child sex abuse charges on Friday after stepping off a flight from Sri Lanka.

He appeared in a Christchurch court on Monday morning.

According to news.com.au, the prosecution opposed bail but Judge Jane Farish ruled the accused did not pose a flight risk and could have two weeks to consider the extradition case against him.

Australian police allege dozens of young boys were subjected to sexual abuse at the hands of Mr McGrath during his time with the Newcastle-Maitland diocese in the 70s-90s.
