Free golf lessons for women in South Burnett

GOLF: Women and girls in the South Burnett will have the opportunity to get fit and learn to play golf for free every Saturday in February.

Kingaroy, Nanango and Murgon golf clubs will be holding a series of four lessons as part of their Get Into Fitness Team (GIFT) program.

To run the free lessons the golf clubs have received $16,655 through the Queensland Government's embracing 2018 program for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The clubs have also been able to purchase 12 sets of clubs with the grant to be used at the lessons.

Kingaroy Golf Club women's vice-captain and club secretary Jane Franklin is very excited to get more women involved in the sport.

"A few years ago we had a similar program but this the first one running across the district and we are looking to attract more women into golf,” she said.

"It is a low-impact sport so you can play it your whole life and it is a social opportunity to make friends and do things together and the competition is very good.”

The lessons at Kingaroy and Nanango will be lead by South Burnett professional Paul Dangerfield and the Murgon lessons will be instructed by Patrick Jones, from Gympie.

The lessons are open to girls 12 years and older and Leanne Dowdle, from Murgon Golf Club, is looking forward to getting more girls involved in the sport.

"Its something that if you learn when you are younger you never forget it,” she said.

"It is good for hand-eye co-ordination with the hitting and the putting.”

The clubs are hoping to have a celebratory round of golf at the end of the lessons and there will be mentoring available for those looking to learn more once the lessons are finished.

There will be equipment available to loan for free and a mentoring program available one the lessons have finished.
