Futsal talent is the goal behind local competition

AS FUTSAL resumed on Thursday, coach Debbie Ovens had her eyes trained for possible talent ahead of the regional championships.

Exceptional talent such as Pacey Clegg and Lateisha Wilkins, who have played for Australia, rose through the ranks of the Kingaroy futsal competition.

With the possibility to produce such quality players, Ovens said she hoped South Burnett players would be able to perform well in the regionals.

Junior players are Oven's biggest focus ahead of the competition to be held in Brisbane over the Easter weekend.

The biggest concern Ovens faced was player availability over the holiday.

With junior teams yet to be finalised, Ovens said once a team was put together, it was relatively easy to get people to link up as team.

"A lot of the kids are in the local competition and play against each other," Ovens said.

Once these rivals are grouped together, Ovens said they often rose to the challenge to play as a unit.

Up against bigger city teams, Ovens said country teams had to link up well in training to stand a chance of winning.

"Country teams sort of struggle because they only get together a few times before," she said.

With age groups spanning from under-10s through to U16s, Ovens said there was a good chance a number of South Burnett teams could play.

Before Christmas last year, Ovens coached the Australian U12 team that toured Hawaii.

She led the national squad to second place just behind the new team.

With this experience, Ovens said futsal competitions beyond club level opened players' eyes to further opportunities.

"It just opens up their world," she said.

There is also a senior regional title on February 5-7 in Oxley.

However, Ovens said the number of South Burnett senior players was down.

Ovens said Torren Anderton was one of the few South Burnett players to enter the regional titles.
