Futsal trio set for overseas tours
Futsal: Three St John's Lutheran School students will embark on the journey of a lifetime next year, when they fly to all corners of the globe as part of Australian representative futsal sides.
Josaiah Okesene (12), Daniel Price (13), and Jessica Ryan (14) will travel to Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and Brazil respectively.
Daniel leaves for a three-week tour of the UK in April, while Josaiah travels to Malaysia in May and Jessica jets off for Brazil in August.
Of the 10 Queensland players picked to represent Australia in touring sides between the ages of 12 and 18, the Kingaroy students were the sole players picked from the South Burnett.
That they all come from the same school is a credit to the St John's Lutheran School futsal program, headed by sports coordinator Greame Moseling.
Moseling said the school community and families of the students were over the moon once word came through of their selections.
"For these guys this journey started a few months ago when our school played in the South West futsal competition,” Moseling said.
"From there they went to a state competition held over the September holidays, and they were then selected into national touring teams to tour in 2017.
"They'll play national and university teams, and be trained by top futsal national coaches from the UK, Brazil and Malaysia.”
The quietly-spoken Josaiah prefers to do all his talking on the sporting field where he has excelled this year, representing the South Burnett in basketball, rugby league, touch football, athletics and of course futsal.
Daniel has relatives in the UK, and is looking forward to meeting them when he embarks on his first overseas trip.
Similarly, the trip to Brazil will be Jessica's first foray overseas, and although Brazil is not at the top of her holiday destination list she is still looking forward to the experience.
After fracturing her elbow in a grand final the week before her national trials, Jessica made the call to have her cast removed and play despite the injury.
With costs in excess of $40,000 for the three to tour, the school started a a fundraising page to assist in covering the expenses.
