Gal won’t walk away from Sharks

It might be a home farewell to Paul Gallen the player, but the Sharks leader is determined to remain at the club for many more years to come.

He's indicated that his final match at Shark Park on Sunday will not necessarily be the last time he'll be out on his sacred home ground. Gallen wants to be part of Cronulla's future - be it as a mentor or member of John Morris's coaching staff.

"Nothing has been decided yet, but it's something I definitely want to look at," Gallen said.

"It's something I've noticed about this club over the years. I look at the powerhouses of the competitions, the Melbournes, the Brisbanes, the Cowboys and Roosters, they have their (most influential players) stick around.

"To have them guys around and to help younger guys come through and just mentor them a little bit and teach them about the game, I think it's really important.

"It's one thing this club has never done well.

"I signed with this club in 1999 because they were minor premiers with ET (Andrew Ettingshausen), (David) Peachey, Mat Rogers, (Jason) Stevens and all these great players. And yet they just finish their careers and then go.

"It may have been both parties contributing to that, but for one reason or another they've just never stuck around.

"That's something I want to change and to be here to help the place keep growing."'
