Gallen to fight off golden staph and Anthony Watts

SHARKS captain Paul Gallen says he is still hopeful of taking on former Cronulla teammate Anthony Watts at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion on Wednesday night in his second professional bout, despite a staph infection scare.

Gallen (pictured) is scheduled to line up against the former troubled league star on the undercard of the Daniel Geale versus Jarrod Fletcher fight.

But the NSW Origin skipper's preparations were thrown into doubt after picking up the golden staph infection in his groin on just his second day back at Sharks training last week, following an ASADA-enforced drugs ban.

He underwent surgery on Friday in an effort to kill off the infection, and was released from a private hospital in Sydney yesterday.

Fight publicist Tristan Hay said he was confident the front-row enforcer would be at an event in Sydney today to promote Wednesday night's big card.
