CHRISTMAS has come early for Game of Thrones fans, with HBO releasing the first teaser trailer for season six of the popular fantasy series.

The 40-second clip features footage of beloved character Jon Snow, who was stabbed in a betrayal by his Night's Watch brothers at the end of season five, as an older man's voice narrates.

"We watch, we listen, and we remember," the man says.

"The past is already written, the ink is dry."

Then there is a montage of key moments from the past five seasons including Jaime Lannister loosing his hand and Danaerys with her dragons.

Bran Stark is then shown with his eyes rolled back as he uses his "warg" powers, with actor Isaac Hempstead Wright saying "they have no idea what's going to happen".

The young Stark didn't appear in season five at all but will make an important comeback next year. Season four saw the on-the-run noble finally catch up with the three-eyed raven north of The Wall.

It seems guaranteed his ability to take over the minds of animals and other people will play a key role in the continuing power struggles for control of Westeros.

His simple-minded companion Hodor is also expected to return.

Season six of Game of Thrones will premiere in April on Foxtel's Showcase channel.
