Garmin offers heads-up display for driving

GARMIN will released a heads-up display for $179, a feature which many car makers are charging thousands.

The new technology has found its way into vehicles in recent years to help keep driver eyes on the road while also maintaining speed vigilance. First found in luxury cars such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the displays project the speed and navigation advice onto the windscreen just below the driver's eyeline.

In recent times, the HUD feature has found its way into more mainstream vehicles - including the Holden Commodore.

It works extremely well and is a great tool for those who find the right pedal too appealing.

The new Garmin HUD costs $179 and runs on your smartphone, but does require annual NAVIGON Mobile Navigator apps which are priced at $69.95 for iOS, $49.95 for Android and $62.49 for Windows smartphones.

Daily and monthly subscriptions are also available ($1.95 daily, $7.95 monthly).

According to Garmin, the set-up is simple: "Apply a transparent sticker to the car's windshield or attach the included reflector lens and placing the HUD's self-adhesive base on the dashboard. Wirelessly connecting via Bluetooth to smartphones running a Garmin StreetPilot or NAVIGON app, HUD provides spoken turn-by-turn directions through the smartphone speaker or Bluetooth-connected car stereo. An integrated USB port allows users to charge their smartphone on the go so concerns about conserving battery life is the least of driver worries."

HUD will be available October from Harvey Norman and Samsung Experience stores in Sydney and Melbourne as well as online at samsung.com.au.
