‘Get off your gluteus maximus’: Climate policy denied

A POLITICIAN from a Great Barrier Reef-reliant electorate says he is proud to not have a climate change policy.

Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan said his party, NQ First, would not create a policy to address greenhouse gas emissions.

"If you're looking for a climate change policy from NQ First, you won't find it," Mr Costigan said.

Mr Costigan said he went against the scientific consensus and cast doubt on the impact of climate change on the environment.

He said he agreed with researchers like Dr Peter Ridd, who has argued the impacts of agricultural run off and climate change on the reef have been sensationalised.

Mr Costigan said his lack of a climate change policy did not mean he was neglecting "the koalas and Nemo".

In June Mr Costigan announced a $3 million pledge to set up a research station on St Bees Island to research koala populations.

Mr Costigan said he would advocate for a direct, grassroots sense of environmental responsibility, rather than try and tackle climate change.

He said he was not looking for "a medal" for when he picked up litter earlier in the week.

"Get off your gluteus maximus and do something about it," he said.
