Girl, 6, killed in quad bike tragedy

A YOUNG girl has died and another has suffered serious head injuries after a horror quad bike crash in NSW's north west on the weekend.

Police said five children aged between six and 13 were riding two quad bikes on a property near Pilliga, west of Narrabri on Sunday.

One of the bikes left the road and crashed into two trees about 12.15pm.

A six-year-old girl died at the scene.

None of the three girls lived at the property.

Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash and whether the children were wearing helmets.

In the past seven years (2011-17) there have now been 110 fatalities involving quad bikes nationally with the about 25 per cent of these occurring in NSW.

The most recent victim was a seven-year-old boy, Connor Irvine, near Griffith.

He had been riding the quad bike with a nine-year-old family friend on his family's Barellan property 60km east of Griffith when they crashed.

His family watched on in horror as the accident unfolded.

It is understood Connor was wearing a helmet.
