KARL bettridge will spend this Christmas with 68 other Australians who are working in Antarctica.

The Gladstone man moved to Antarctica in November this year after he scored a job as a summer electrician for the Australian Antarctic Division.

After working on construction sites in Gladstone, the opportunity arose to work abroad.

Karl, who lived in Gladstone for 28 years said so far it's been a very unique experience.

"I've most enjoyed being in a environment where absolutely everyone wants to be here.

And even thought they are all far from home, they will be treated to a Christmas to remember.

On Christmas day Karl and the 68 other Australians living on the station will celebrate with a pig spit barbecue roast.

They will be treated to bunch and dinner from three chefs too, and Santa will arrive to deliver them presents.

The 38 year old has had the chance to explore the country between his working days. He's also had the opportunity to get involved with other fields of work.

"If you are asked to join a helicopter flight, you can find yourself heading inland to an airfield to assist the aircraft ground support or to resupply scientists at a penguin rookery on one of the nearby islands.

"There's a great community vibe on station ... I really enjoy the diversity of the people you get to mix with, a quick glance around the lounge of an evening will find a mix of sparkies chatting to scientists, plumbers playing chess with pilots and the ping pong table being used by just about everyone.:

Applications are now open for the 2016/17 season for the Australian Antarctic Division at jobs.antarctica.gov.au.
